Youth Suicide: A Growing Crisis Demanding Action

Suicide is a devastating public health crisis that claims the lives of far too many young people, leaving families and communities heartbroken. It is the second-leading cause of death for individuals aged 10–34 in the United States, according to the CDC’s 2021 data. The rising tide of youth suicide demands our attention and action.

    Here are the critical facts:

  • Suicide rates for youth aged 10–24 have surged by 62% over the past decade, signaling an urgent need for intervention.

  • Boys are 4X more likely to die by suicide than girls, often using highly lethal methods like firearms (over 50% of cases) or suffocation (33.5% of cases).

  • Girls are more likely to attempt suicide, highlighting the need for targeted mental health support across genders.

  • LGBTQ+ youth face a disproportionately high risk, being four times more likely to consider suicide, with 41% of LGBTQ+ high school students reporting serious suicidal thoughts in 2023

    Key risk factors include:

  • Mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety.

  • Adverse childhood experiences, like abuse or neglect.

  • Substance abuse, which can exacerbate vulnerability.

  • Easy access to lethal means, particularly firearms.

  • Social media pressures, including cyberbullying, which amplify emotional distress

Most believe this crisis is preventable, but it requires collective action. We must raise awareness, provide resources, and foster environments where young people feel supported. I call on you—my community of compassionate, engaged individuals—to join me in this fight. Please donate to my fundraising campaign to support the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP).

Your generosity will fund vital research, expand mental health services, and support prevention programs that can save lives. Every contribution, no matter the size, brings hope to youth in crisis. Together, we can show them they are not alone and build a future where every young person feels valued and supported. Please, give generously by PayPal or Venmo today.
